In April 2014 I, as a selected member of the Somerset Cow unit for World Jamboree, was invited along to a training day to meet all the other lucky members of the unit and have a nice day interacting with lifelong to be friends!
Although the place was tricky to find at first, Christian, a fellow scout who had also been selected arrived to a warm welcome of people I hadn’t seen or managed to talk to on the selection weekend. That welcome immediately humbled me to what I had managed to achieve by just being selected. The people selected gave a great atmosphere and a great ability to make even shyest of us (myself included) feel confident to speak and interact with the rest of the unit! The first activity involved speaking to everyone, getting their signature and an interesting fact about them, of which some were very interesting- everything from pier jumping to playing the trombone.
For the remainder of the day we continued to find out more about ourselves. I found out that I can’t do origami yet can catch a potato on a fork with ease! The activities with the chopsticks have encouraged me to practise at home now and then. In truth this day was just a glimpse at the future adventures and enjoyment I along with other fellow members of the Scouts organisation will have together. What was also good about the day is that we were given a series of merchandise to sell and help raise money for the unit. This is because people get something physical for the money and they like the World Jamboree Souvenirs!
To conclude, this day was a great taster into what the WSJ will be like for me as a participant. I strongly believe that the atmosphere and the way in which we all got along, will be a contributing factor to why I will enjoy it so much!
