It was early March when we began our selection process to find members for our unit. The Somerset Unit is split up into 27 Scouts from the Somerset area and 9 Guides from the South West region. The guides had already been selected by this point and our task was to select the 27 Scouts who will make up the rest of the unit.
We had a tough task as during our first selection weekend we saw over 90 applicants split up over 2 days who were put through their paces. We had a series of different tasks for the applicants which would give the selection panel chance see everyones strengths and weaknesses. With scores totted up we had the hard task of selecting 40ish to attend a second selection weekend.
The second selection weekend was going to be even tougher getting to our final 27. Starting with a mystery hike the applicants were again put through a range of different tasks during which they were able to meet and have a Q&A session with the unit leader team. In the evening we enjoyed a campfire and spirits were high all weekend, which made the final choice so hard.
Eventually the scores were finalised and we landed on the final 27 who would form the Somerset World Jamboree Unit! We knew from the quality of the young people who attended selection we would have a fantastic unit, and we were not wrong!!!
